“Exploring Surreal Realms: The Artistry of Shwetlana Mehta”
Shwetlana Mehta, a Mumbai-born visual artist, has emerged as a distinctive voice in the art world, seamlessly blending her Indian roots with an international perspective gained through her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from The School of Visual Arts in New York. Her body of work, characterized by a surreal dream-like space, delves into eerie and uncomfortable subject matter, reflecting a multi-layered approach to painting. With a limited color palette, she crafts a sense of uneasiness, mystery, and quietness, drawing inspiration from repetition that permeates her art.
Born and raised in Mumbai, a city known for its vibrant energy and cultural diversity, Shwetlana Mehta found inspiration in the city’s rich art history, diverse landscapes, and colorful festivals. Growing up, she pursued sports and developed a love for animals, engaging in rescue work for stray animals. Her extensive travels within India with her family exposed her to the country’s rich cultural heritage.
Her family, predominantly academicians, noticed her early inclination towards art and became her pillars of support throughout her artistic journey. As one of the first in her family to pursue art, she embarked on a unique path, exploring various forms of art-making from painting to printmaking.
